About

At the University of Exeter, we have established strengths in climate and sustainability research, so linking this to social science and our rapidly expanding capacity in AI and data science creates enormous potential.

What we do

The Centre for Environmental Intelligence takes an impact-focused approach, collaborating with strong partners to deliver excellent applied research solutions.

We believe that working across disciplines is essential; the environmental challenges that we face in the 21st century do not sit neatly within disciplinary boundaries and demand a more holistic approach that is informed by social sciences as well as STEM subjects and technology. Therefore, we deliberately engage widely with people and researchers from different perspectives, seeking to co-create solutions with stakeholders to ensure they are fit for purpose.

What is Environmental Intelligence?

Environmental Intelligence (EI) is the responsible use of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to address environmental and sustainability challenges.

We combine:

- Strengths in climate and sustainability research

- Insights from the social sciences

- Expertise in AI and data science

To create novel solutions to help the environment and society thrive in the coming century.

Environmental Intelligence (EI) Network at Exeter

The Environmental Intelligence (EI) Network brings together academic researchers, businesses, government, charities, research organisations and public sector bodies across different disciplines and sectors in the UK and beyond, to tackle urgent environmental and sustainability challenges through the application of data science and AI.

Focused on applied, translational EI research and innovation, delivering real-world impacts, from informing decision making and influencing policy and practice to risk assessment and management, and development, evaluation and application of novel technological solutions, the EI network’s activities include:

- EI themed events and workshops

- Opportunity development – projects, bids and consortia to respond rapidly to funding and policy initiatives

- EI community development – enabling people and organisations to connect and work together

- Raising the EI sector’s profile

- Building links to the UKRI Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) in EI
